WALPOLE - The Red Wing Diner in Walpole is for sale for over a million dollars.

The restaurant, which opened in the ‘30s, is well known to locals and Patriots fans, as it’s just a mile down the road from Gillette Stadium. It is known for its fried seafood, among other items.

The owners closed the restaurant for what they said were repairs in a Sept. 5 Facebook post. Instead of reopening, a for-sale appeared outside the diner this week.

The news came as a surprise to many longtime customers.

“Omg was just by there, and there was a for sale sign,” customer Ann Rubenstein posted to the Red Wing Facebook page. “I’m shocked.”

A for-sale sign popped up in front of Red Wing Diner on Route 1 in Walpole this month after the restaurant initially closed for repairs Sept. 5.

Jack Conway Realtors out of Mansfield is handling the sale. It is listing the 2,727-square-foot restaurant and 5-acre property at $1.35 million.

Liam Murphy, a former manager at the diner, purchased the business in 2008.

Some now-former customers complained online about what they said was a spike in prices and other changes that had left a bad taste in their mouth leading up to the closure.

“Hopefully, at some point, someone will raise this once restaurant from the dead,” customer Gary Coggins said on the diner’s Facebook page.
